2018 marks Wyoming County United Way’s 50 year Anniversary!

Back in the day ….

Clergyman and church lay people formed the Tunkhannock Area Council of Churches. The plan was to cooperate in meeting the mutual needs of the community. The vision was to serve as a united effort to support individuals and families in each of the congregations. It was not long when it was discovered that others outside of the church community were in need. Individual agencies found themselves having to fundraise in addition to delivering services to the community; and finding nearly all of the fundraising efforts were overlapping. In addition, companies such as Procter & Gamble moved in Wyoming County and did not like the idea of each charity soliciting the company for funds.

The church officials quickly saw the dilemma and introduced the concept of the United Fund to local civic organizations and business leaders.

In 1968, a public meeting held at the Prince Hotel introducing the newly formed Wyoming County Fund. A group of residents from around Wyoming County eagerly signed on to volunteer as the first Board of Directors. The first organization planned and coordinated local services and conducted a single fundraising campaign for 11 agencies. The inaugural campaign raised more than $61,000, far exceeding the stated goal of $43,500.

Now in 2018, Wyoming County United Way is raising over $700,000 annually and supporting programs at over 23 agencies.  Please join us to celebrate our 50-Years of Caring!
