FAQs

United Way is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) agency that brings people and communities together to advance the common good. We partner with local nonprofits, businesses, government and social service agencies to address our community’s most pressing needs.

United Way helps people in need in Wyoming County.

Wyoming County United Way is run by a group of volunteers who give their time to help advance the organizations mission.  There is one full time staff person.

Wyoming County United Way is a LOCAL organization that is part of a worldwide network. Every United Way is autonomous; locally governed, organized and operated. The United Way network includes more than 1,400 community-based United Way organizations in the United States and around the world.

We pay dues to United Way Worldwide for which we receive membership to be a United Way organization.  Some of the benefits received are the rights to use the name and logo, national marketing, training opportunities, networking opportunities, guidance and other resources.

Our work focuses on three areas: Education, Income, and Health: the building blocks for a quality life. All of our partner programs and initiatives support these areas.

Our fund distribution process is 100% volunteer driven.  A group of knowledgeable volunteers from our community carefully review grant applications and meet with representatives from agencies to best determine which programs are funded.  Their recommendations are reviewed and approved by our volunteer board of directors.  After selection, these programs are rigorously monitored to ensure they produce positive, measurable results.

United Way is not a direct service provider.  All of the money raised is distributed to agencies to provide services.  If you need help, United Way can direct you to an agency that may be able to help.  For a more comprehensive listing of social services available in Wyoming County, please call PA’s Helpline at 211.

Yes, you can designate to any 501(c)3 organization.

We all have special interests, and we would not ask you to support United Way at the expense of another charitable organization. However, there are critical issues in our community that cannot be solved by a single agency alone. United Way’s broad partnerships, coordinated planning and needs assessments, and commitment to measurable results ensure that your gift will be used wisely and effectively to meet our community’s most critical needs as a whole.
